Predictors of sputum-culture conversion in the era of re-emergent Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the State of North Carolina, 1993-1998.The objective of this study was to determine predictors of sputum-culture conversion among patients undergoing treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. This was a cohort study based on data collected through the expanded tuberculosis control program in the State of North Carolina. Survival analysis using Kaplan-Meier product-limit estimator and Cox proportional hazards models General Proportional hazards models are a sub-class of survival models in statistics. For the purposes of this article, consider survival models to consist of two parts: the underlying hazard function, describing how hazard (risk) changes over time, and the effect was employed to compute estimates for time-to-sputum conversion and rate ratios respectively. Sputum conversion was reported in 1144 of a total of 1735 cases (66%). Documented conversion rose significantly from 52.9% at baseline to a peak of 95.1% by the end of the study, representing a 5.1% annual increase in the proportion of patients with reported conversion (P = 0.007). Patients coinfected with the human immunodeficiency virus human immunodeficiency virus n. HIV. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) A transmissible retrovirus that causes AIDS in humans. (HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States. ) had a 46% lower rate of sputum conversion than HIV-uninfected TB patients [adjusted hazard ratio (HR) = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.44-0.67]. Other significant predictors of reported conversion rates included directly observed therapy directly observed therapy Therapeutics A strategy for ensuring Pt compliance with therapy, where a health care worker or designee watches the Pt swallow each dose of prescribed drugs. See Patient compliance. Cf Directed observation. [P = 0.02], the number of drugs used in the therapy regimen (P = 0.001), and non-injectable drug use (P = 0.012). The rate of reported sputum-culture conversion in TB patients was low, consistent with an earlier population-based report. The symbiotic relationship between HIV and mycobacterial mycobacterial emanating from or pertaining to mycobacterium. mycobacterial granuloma may be caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (see cutaneous tuberculosis), M. infection might be a factor that compromised response to therapy in coinfected individuals. St. Agnes Hospital St. Agnes Hospital is a fictional mental institution created for MTV's Fear reality series. It was featured on Season 1, Episode 2. The real location was attempted to be kept under wraps since local ghost hunters would surely head to the site to do their own "investigations. , Baltimore, MD. |
