Environments

Prassi Software USA, Inc., today announced the industry's first copy and record-on-the-fly software for Panasonic and other DVD Forum-compliant DVD-RAM drives in Windows(R)95, 98 and NT environments.

Based on Prassi's highly successful DVD Rep(TM) 1.0 for DVD-Recordable applications, the new DVD Rep 2.0 software is a complete, pre-mastering solution that provides industry standard DVD-RAM drives with robust, easy-to-use copy and record capabilities. With DVD Rep 2.0, high-capacity, rewritable DVD-RAM discs can be recorded on-the-fly or via disc image in pure Universal Disc Format (UDF (1) (Universal Disk Format) A file system for optical media developed by the Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA), www.osta.org, based on the ECMA 167/ISO 13346 standard. ) file system (the file system on which DVD is based) and as an UDF/ISO 9660 bridge UDF/ISO bridge format.

Featuring twice the transfer rate of CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution.  and CD-RW (CD-ReWritable) The only rewritable CD technology. CD-RW disks look like other CD media, but with close inspection, they have a more polished surface with a very dark blue-gray cast.  drives, and providing four times the capacity, the Panasonic LF-D101 DVD RAM uses removable, rewritable 2.6GB (single-sided) or 5.2GB (double-sided) media that provides a storage cost of less than one cent per Megabyte. Extremely versatile, the LF-D101 can also allow compatibility with all DVD format and MultiRead discs, including DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-ROM DVD-ROM: see digital versatile disc.

In addition to being ideal for general computer applications and low-cost distribution of large files, the high capacity and broad compatibility of the new DVD-RAM drives make them ideal for content developers during their development cycles.

Standards Simplified Development

), we felt comfortable in investing in the development of a product for the marketplace," said Jeff Stenehjem, Prassi Vice President Sales and Marketing. "We have already had discussions with Panasonic and other DVD-RAM-compliant drive manufacturers about bundling the software with their systems, and we're all very comfortable with meeting the market demand and user requirements."

Without requiring a low-level driver or VXD, DVD Rep 2.0 will write and rewrite DVD-RAM cartridges that are natively compatible with Microsoft(R)Windows 95, 98 or NT. The application's on-the-fly recording capability not only enhances system performance, it frees-up precious hard drive capacity.

"We're certain that users will appreciate the simplicity of our uncluttered solution to record DVD-RAM as well as the native compatibility of the resulting medium," said Paolo Barettoni, Prassi Vice President, R&D. "By providing full support for the Panasonic DVD-RAM drive as a source for the entire Prassi mastering product, we can help users take full advantage of this multi-functional unit."

Jeff Saake, general manager of Panasonic Industrial Company, noted that with today's imaged-enhanced documents, multimedia applications and stockpiles of information being downloaded from the Web, the LF-D101 DVD-RAM drive and DVD Rep have a ready market. "Now that the drive is here, OEMs, system integrators, VARs, businesses and end users are all requesting a product like DVD Rep that will help users maximize the benefits of the DVD-RAM drives. Combined, the Panasonic DVD-RAM drive and Prassi's DVD Rep 2.0 also provide a growth path to the future. DVD-RAM has a technically demonstrated format evolution to the 21st century; and, as a Win 32 application, DVD Rep 2.0 will provide compatibility with Windows 98 and future Win 32-based operating systems."
