Practice caution when driving this winter.

Byline: The Register-Guard

With winter setting in, the state Department of Transportation is reminding motorists to be prepared for hazardous driving conditions and to be careful while traveling state highways the next few months.

Before hitting the road, drivers should take time to check road conditions and weather reports to know what lies ahead, said Jay Remy of the department's highway division. "Depending on what you learn, you may change your plans and avoid a harrowing experience or continue with a lot less anxiety about the road ahead," he said.

Up-to-the minute road conditions, weather reports and more can be found at www.tripcheck .com. The transportation depart- ment's toll-free phone number for current road conditions is (800) 977-6368.

The department is offering a few more safety tips to drivers who plan to travel highways during the winter months:

Before heading out onto the highway, practice chaining up your vehicle. Weather can change quickly during the winter and it's it's

When driving in severe weather, give yourself extra time to reach your destination. And slow down, because posted speed limits are for ideal dry conditions.

Drive with your low-beam headlights on during periods of snow or fog. If you can't see well enough to drive safely, pull off the pavement pavement, the wearing surface of a road, street, or sidewalk. Parts of Babylon and Troy are believed to have been paved; Roman roads were noted for their durable stone paving. Cobblestones were common from late medieval times into the 19th cent. , set the emergency brake and turn on your emergency flashers.

Be aware of black ice and know that bridges and overpasses can be the most dangerous parts of the highway during winter. They don't hold heat and they freeze faster than the rest of the roadway.
