Powersoft delivers beta release of PowerBuilder 5.0; New version of PowerBuilder enables the deployment of fast applications anywhere.

CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1995 -- Powersoft Corporation (company) Powersoft Corporation - A leading vendor of client/server application development tools.

In February 1994, Watcom became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Powersoft Corporation which merged with Sybase on 13 February 1995.
 today announced it has delivered the beta version A pre-shipping release of hardware or software that has gone through alpha test. A beta version of software is supposed to be very close to the final product, but, in practice, it is more a way of getting users to test the software in the first place under real conditions.  of PowerBuilder 5.0 to more than 700 users around the world.

PowerBuilder 5.0 includes new features and enhancements that enable developers to quickly build high-performance, distributed client/server applications for deployment in all areas of their organizations. PowerBuilder 5.0 is currently scheduled to ship in the first half of 1996.

Powersoft, the leader in client/server application development, designed PowerBuilder 5.0 to facilitate the development and deployment of fast applications anywhere. Release-defining features include:

o Compiled code for high-performance script execution, built upon the state-of-the-art Watcom compiler technology;

o Practical application partitioning Separating an application into components that run on multiple servers. Programming languages and development systems that support this architecture, known as "three-tier client/server," may allow the program to be developed as a whole and then separated into pieces later.  that enables developers to distribute compiled PowerBuilder objects on servers and clients across the network for improved application performance and management;

o Multiplatform support for Windows 3.x Windows 3.x can refer to either an individual or all of the following versions of Microsoft Windows:
  • Windows 3.0
  • Windows 3.1x
These should not be confused with the first three releases of Windows NT, which were also given "3.x" version numbers, i.e.
, Windows 95, Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  (Intel), Windows NT (Alpha), UNIX UNIX

 and Macintosh that enables the development and deployment of applications anywhere;

o Extended OLE 2.0 support that allows "plug and play" of any OCX (OLE Control EXtension) A component software technology from Microsoft that enables a Windows program to add functionality by calling ready-made components. Generally called "OLE controls" or "OLE custom controls," they appear to the end user as just another part of  object for productive, component-based development. PowerBuilder 5.0's support of OLE 2.0 includes OLE automation clients and the ability to create OLE automation servers for access by products that support OLE automation See COM automation.  interfaces;

o ObjectCycle, a powerful server-based object management facility that provides versioning, labeling and reporting functions to assist development teams doing rapid application development in a workgroup setting;

o PowerBuilder 5.0 provides a full 32-bit, Windows 95 logo-compliant development environment. It provides right mouse button support as well as all of the richness of the Windows 95 graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to
, including list and tree views. Using PowerBuilder controls, developers can build their applications on Windows 95 and deploy them on multiple platforms, such as Windows NT, Macintosh or UNIX.

"With the first four versions of PowerBuilder, Powersoft's users proved client/server could work. With PowerBuilder 5.0, we are launching the next generation of client/server applications," said David Litwack, president of Powersoft. "PowerBuilder 5.0's compiled code offers the improvements required for application scalability up and down the enterprise. Its distributed object technology enables fast and flexible application partitioning for maximum performance and manageability."

"With this release of PowerBuilder, Powersoft is addressing the important issues of application performance and scalability," said David Kelly, senior consultant, Hurwitz Consulting Group, Inc. "PowerBuilder 5.0's practical approach to partitioning enables object distribution on both clients and servers across the network to provide accessible, flexible technology to the growing number of users who are building distributed applications for the enterprise."

"Our first impressions of PowerBuilder 5.0 have been great," said Chris Lundquist, systems analyst programmer and Certified PowerBuilder Developer (CPD CPD citrate phosphate dextrose; see anticoagulant citrate phosphate dextrose solution, under solution.

"We're looking to build large, mission-critical applications that will need to be deployed at all levels of our organization, and PowerBuilder 5.0 fits well with our plans. We welcome the significant performance enhancements brought by compiled code. PowerBuilder 5.0's flexible application partitioning opens up new opportunities for performance tuning and application management. The new ObjectCycle object management facility will be a real plus in our team development environment."
