PowerOpen Association applauds Apple, IBM, and Motorola on PowerPC hardware standard agreement.CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 7, 1994--The PowerOpen Association PowerOpen Association - An independent body established to promote, and test conformance with, the PowerOpen Environment (POE). Monday congratulated Apple, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , and Motorola on their agreement to create a new hardware standard for the personal computer. "We believe that this agreement on a common hardware platform will push products based on the PowerPC architecture to the forefront, giving users RISC RISC in full Reduced Instruction Set Computing Computer architecture that uses a limited number of instructions. The PowerOpen Environment is the next generation open systems specification providing end users, software developers, and systems vendors with an easy to use, standards-based, high performance software platform. Derived from internationally accepted standards such as X/Open's XPG See X/Open Portability Guide. XPG - X/open Portability Guide 4, Spec 1170, and POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX) An IEEE 1003.1 standard that defines the language interface between application programs and the Unix operating system. 1003, the POE defines both the application programming interfaces and the binary formats for systems and applications.
