PowerFile Inc., the leader in high-capacity, low-cost optical storage libraries for Backup, Archive and Digital Asset Management, today announced the December availability of a high-capacity, low-cost optical library for network backup. The PowerFile(TM) R200 Backup is designed for small and medium-sized enterprises and features DVD-RAM/R drives from Panasonic and Back Again II(TM) software from CDS.

The Network Backup Optical Library

The complete solution features the patented PowerFile(TM) R200 Backup DVD-RAM/R library with a 1.7 TB (compressed) capacity. PowerFile R200's are scalable to 10TB (compressed capacity) by simply daisy chaining additional units. The R200 Backup uses DVD-RAM/R drives from Panasonic and can hold up to 200 DVD-RAM A rewritable DVD disc endorsed by the DVD Forum. Using phase change technology, DVD-RAMs are like removable hard disks, and the media can be rewritten 100,000 times compared to 1,000 times for DVD-RW and DVD+RW. The first DVD-RAM drives with a capacity of 2.6GB (single sided) or 5.  discs. The unit connects via FireWire(R) (IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  1394) to a backup server A computer in a network used to store copies of files from client machines or other servers. Such servers typically have their disks set up in a RAID configuration to provide fault tolerance. See backup program, RAID, SAN and LAN free backup. . The R200 Backup is bundled with Back Again II network backup software from CDS. The product will be available before the end of the year.

"In our recommended configuration, customers can backup at hard disk speeds and receive the quality, random access and reliability of optical storage for about one-half what a company would have to pay for an equivalent tape solution that would likely be slower and much less reliable," said Anders Axelsson, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "This is an extremely compelling use for DVD-RAM technology," said Dana Berzin, DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

product manager for Panasonic Industrial Company's Global Computer Group. "PowerFile optimizes the inherent strengths of DVD-RAM, including built-in error correction, random access, more than 100,000 overwrites and a 30-year data life. Recovery is faster because there's no waiting for rewinds when locating files; data restoration begins in seconds. And unlike other DVD formats, DVD-RAM discs do not require time-consuming finalization."

The Backup Software

CDS Back Again II is bundled with the PowerFile R200 Backup and is perfect for the medium-sized enterprise. It has an extremely intuitive interface that requires virtually no training to use. It is easy to set up and schedule full or incremental backup jobs and to set up industry standard schemes for backup like Grandfather, Father, Son (operating system) Grandfather, Father, Son - (GFS) A backup rotation scheme in which a "grandfather" backup is performed on the first Monday of each month, a "father" backup is performed on every other Monday and a "son" backup is performed on every other day of the week.  (GFS See Google File System.

Even though it is easy to use, Back Again II is a sophisticated backup package loaded with features including modules for backing up open files and industry standard databases like Microsoft(R) Exchange(TM).

"The R200 and Back Again II are the perfect bundle for small and medium-sized companies. They are affordable, and easy to install, use and maintain -- especially when compared to tape," said Brent Bowlby, President of CDS Inc.

Where To See IT?

PowerFile will be demonstrating the new R200 optical network backup solution at Comdex November 18-22, 2002 in the Recordable DVD Pavilion at the Las Vegas Convention Center The Las Vegas Convention Center is owned and operated by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and is located in Clark County, Nevada. It is one of the largest Convention centers in the world. At the end of 2004, the center had 3.  Booth #7064.
