and breast cancer, today announced a new major international collaboration with the University of Thessaly The University of Thessaly (Greek: Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας) was founded in 1984.  in Larissa, Greece, focusing on the proteomic discovery of biomarkers for Parkinson's disease Parkinson's disease or Parkinsonism, degenerative brain disorder first described by the English surgeon James Parkinson in 1817. When there is no known cause, the disease usually appears after age 40 and is referred to as Parkinson's disease. . The collaboration will also extend to cover other neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's disease (ăls`hī'mərz, ôls–), degenerative disease of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex that leads to atrophy of the brain and senile dementia. , and ALS Als (äls), Ger. The University of Thessaly (www.uth.gr/main/home_en.html) will provide Power3 with clinically confirmed samples of neurodegenerative disease Neurodegenerative disease

, including age- and gender-match controls. Power3 will use its existing proprietary and patent-pending technologies to analyze the samples, seeking new protein biomarkers for the early detection of neurodegenerative diseases to add to its portfolio.

Steven B. Rash, chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Power3, said he is hopeful that the collaboration will provide more than 300 patient samples, "significantly expanding Power3's already-extensive patient database and further validating the pioneering work we have done in the discovery of blood serum-based biomarkers.

"Power3's collaborative research business model offers distinct and complementary ways for partners such as the University to access our expertise, discoveries and technologies through research agreements and partnerships," he said. "Applying our proprietary technology and methodologies, Power3 has discovered novel protein biomarkers for early detection of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, ALS, and other neurodegenerative diseases, and has continued to advance the analysis and application of proteomic discovery to elucidate disease mechanisms measurable in blood, identify and stratify strat·i·fy

Combining Academia and Professional Research

Mr. Rash called the Power3-University of Thessaly collaboration "an international bridge, from Europe to America, from Greece to Houston, which allows our two organizations to join hands in a mutual effort to diagnose and treat diseases that have a great impact on mankind.

"Working with Dr. Katerina Markopoulou and the Department of Neurology at the University of Thessaly is a unique honor for the Power3 Medical team," Mr. Rash said. "It is an exciting challenge when leaders from academia and professional research merge talents and efforts toward a common good, as we work to discover early, blood-based, non-invasive ways to diagnose Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases," he said.

"It is our hope and belief," Mr. Rash said, "that our biomarkers offer tremendous promise in finding new and powerful diagnostic and therapeutic products in areas with critical unmet needs."

"Our collaboration with Power3," Dr. Markopoulou said, "provides us with a unique opportunity to identify biomarkers that are critically needed to non-invasively diagnose Parkinson's disease and discriminate between Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases."

To date, Power3 has analyzed more than 600 neurodegenerative blood serum samples including samples from Parkinson's patients. Power3 recently announced the discovery of 11 biomarkers which, it said, demonstrated the ability to identify Parkinson's disease in its early stages through blood serum-based testing, as well as differentiate between Parkinson's and Parkinson's-like diseases (see "Power3 Identifies Early-Detection Biomarkers for Parkinson's Disease; Can Differentiate between Parkinson's and Parkinson's-like Diseases at Early Stages," Business Wire, September 6, 2006).
