Power3 Medical Files Patent Application for 47 Neurodegenerative Biomarkers.

Direct and Indirect Cost of Treating Alzheimer's in U.S. at $100 Billion Annually

HOUSTON -- Power3 Medical Products Inc. (OTC: PWRM, www.Power3Medical.com), today announced the filing of another patent application - its seventh in the last 10 months -- for 47 new biomarkers it has discovered and validated for use in the early diagnosis and detection of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and ALS.

Power3 has 15 patents pending with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including a filing earlier this week for 10 new biomarkers for early detection and treatment of breast cancer. That patent application is in addition to an earlier utility filing in December 2006 for 12 other protein biomarkers in blood serum.

"Alzheimer's disease (AD) is of particular interest because of the soaring number of cases and spiraling costs for caring for the 4.5 million Americans believed to have AD," said Steven Rash, chairman and CEO of Power3. 18 Million with Alzheimer's, 34 Million by 2025

Mr. Rash said that even though there is no definitive test for Alzheimer's "other than an autopsy," medical industry statistics show some 18 million people worldwide have AD - with the total projected to nearly double to 34 million by 2025.

"There are no proven treatments to delay the onset or prevent the progression of Alzheimer's," he said. "Power3 believes that the ability to rapidly and accurately distinguish Alzheimer's from other forms of dementia and neurological and vascular disorders with similar symptoms, prognoses, and treatments is one of the most critical issues in medicine today.

Power3 believes that use of protein biomarkers in blood can accelerate diagnosis and delivery of treatment and help pharmaceutical companies screen patients for clinical trials. Mr. Rash said. The blood serum concentrations of the 47 protein biomarkers covered in the patent filing, he said, have been determined in samples from more than 600 neurodegenerative disease patients and normal control individuals.

Mr. Rash said Power3's approach is based on its pioneering efforts in proteomics, and "critical to the value of our intellectual property and essential for developing high-throughput commercial diagnostic tests, in addition to monitoring the progress of patients during treatment or clinical trials and in discovering drug targets.

"Because early signs of Alzheimer's are so difficult to distinguish from normal signs of aging, most patients are not diagnosed until neuronal damage is extensive," Mr. Rash said. "The ready availability of diagnostic biomarkers in the blood would enable physicians to diagnose more AD patients earlier and begin treatments when they could be most effective. The failure of potential drugs to clear clinical trials is also a key factor driving research into biomining for new unique biomarkers to predict response and monitor treatment."
