Power3 Medical Continues Building Patent and IP Portfolio, Filing for Permanent Patent on Test for ALS and Parkinson's.

HOUSTON -- Power3 Medical Products, Inc. (PWRM.PK), a leading proteomics company that develops and commercializes early detection diagnostic tests for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, said today it has filed an application for another patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Initially filed on a provisional basis in May 2005, the application is for Power3's first generic, blood-based diagnostic test for neuromuscular disorders, including ALS - Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis, known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," and Parkinson's Disease. The application was filed in conjunction with major research institutions in the Houston area, with Power3 having an exclusive license to commercialize the technology involved.

This is Power3's second patent application filed in recent weeks. On April 24, it filed for a provisional patent for a test identifying which patients with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) are resistant to - or are likely to build resistance to - imatinib mesylate (Gleevec(R)), the leading drug used to treat CML. Power3's filing said that if drug resistance is indicated in its test, it can offer drug design specifications that can overcome that resistance.

To date, Power3 has 20 patents (or patents pending) for its proprietary work developing testing methods and technologies for neurodegenerative diseases including ALS, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and breast cancer, as well as drug resistance.

The latest application is for a test which uses a blood sample, separates the proteins present, analyzes a panel of protein biomarkers using proteomic techniques, and then determines whether or not the patient has a neuromuscular disease based on the quantity of the biomarkers in the sample combined with biostitistical analysis. Power3 also intends to extend the technology to high throughput immunodiagnostics suitable for clinical laboratories and doctors' offices.
