Dippel was born in the small farm community of Sagerton near Stamford, Texas. He attended Stamford High School where was part of the 1955 and 1956 Texas 2A state championship teams. has been named the winner of the inaugural Power of Influence Award. The award, presented jointly by the AFCA AFCA American Football Coaches Association AFCA Air Force Communications Agency AFCA Area Fuel Consumption Allocation AFCA Antique Fan Collectors Association AFCA American Fan Collectors Association AfCA African Counselling Association and the American Football Coaches Foundaton[TM], was given to Dippel on January 7 at the AFGA AFGA Alberta Fish and Game Association (Canada) AFGA Air Force Gunners Association AFGA Angel Flight of Georgia Coach of the Year Banquet during the Associations convention in New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded . "Larry Dippel embodies everything the Power of Influence Award was created to acknowledge," said AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff. "He is a tremendous and deserving recipient of our first award." The Power of Influence Award was created as a way for the AFCA and AFCF AFCF Advanced Fuel Cycle Facility (DOE project at Idaho National Lab) to honor a deserving high school football coach for his influence on his players, school, and community. This award is not based on wins and losses, however, it is noted that coaches of powerful influence have longevity and success. It is the first time the AFCA has presented an award specifically to honor a high school coach. Dippel has coached in Texas for more than 40 years and has been the head coach/athletics coordinator at Amarillo High for 27 years. A former president of the Texas High School Coaches Association and a past winner of the THSCA's Tom Landry Award, Dippel is enshrined in both the THSCA's Hall of Honor and the Texas Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame. In 1998, he received the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's Achievement Award. Dippel was one of 12 finalists for the Power of Influence Award. He was nominated by the THSCA THSCA Texas High School Coaches Association and was selected by a committee comprised of members of the AFCF[TM] Board of Directors. The individuals nominated must be active head football coaches and embody the life-changing qualities of respect and inspiration. In addition, they must have touched lives and caused student-athletes and others to want to emulate their honesty, patience, and modesty. |
