Power Restoration in Broward, Manatee and Sarasota Counties to be Completed Tonight; Round-the-Clock Effort Continues.MIAMI -- Florida Power & Light Company crews are continuing to make progress restoring power. Five days after Hurricane Frances pounded Florida, FPL has restored power to nearly 2.4 million homes and businesses out of the 2.8 million that lost power from the storm. Essentially all customers in Broward, Manatee and Sarasota counties will be restored by midnight tonight. As restoration is being completed in these areas, crews have been moving to supplement the massive restoration underway along Florida's east coast from Palm Beach County north to St. Johns County. More than 9,000 FPL field restoration personnel and some 7,100 out-of-state crews are involved in the restoration effort. FPL also is continuing to monitor the progress of Hurricane Ivan. If Ivan becomes an imminent threat to Florida, the company will implement hurricane procedures which include measures to keep FPL and out-of-state field personnel safe and out of harm's way in Florida. Depending on the storm's projected track, some FPL crews may have to temporarily return to their home base as early as tomorrow to secure their homes for Ivan. While FPL expects to retain most of the out-of-state crews in the restoration effort here, some of those crews may have to return to their home territories if they could be affected by Ivan. In the meantime, restoration efforts related to Hurricane Frances will continue as long as conditions are safe.
