The Council's stated mission is "to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests". and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative The Sustainable Forestry Initiative is a program to certify forests to insure they are being managed in a sustainable manner. SFI was started in 1994 by members of the American Forest and Paper Association. . The assessment will be conducted with full transparency, according to according to prep. 1. Potlatch will make all fundings, results, recommendations and reports available to the public. The Institute will examine forest management practices on Potlatch's 670,000 acres of timberland in Idaho in side-by-side field examinations. Potlatch will also perform a "reverse assessment" as an evaluation of its experience with the two certification standards. "We've completed dual assessment projects on public forestlands across the U.S. over the last five years," said Catherine Mater, Pinchot Institute senior fellow and certification projects manager. "Transferring the lessons from public lands to private corporately owned forestlands is difficult... The full transparency of this project allows us to really learn from the experience." |
