This videotape has been created to provide information and exercises to restore strength and control of the low back musculature musculature /mus·cu·la·ture/ (mus´kul-ah-cher) the muscular apparatus of the body or of a part.

and pelvic floor The pelvic floor or pelvic diaphragm is composed of muscle fibers of the levator ani, the coccygeus, and associated connective tissue which span the area underneath the pelvis.  after childbirth. As the author states, it is an educational and exercise video intended for the general public. The videotape is accompanied by a booklet that illustrates and describes the exercises demonstrated in the video.

Because of the breadth of information in the video, the general public audience might require multiple viewings before they can follow the detailed descriptions. These descriptions include a brief summary of the anatomy of bones, joints, and musculature of the low back and pelvis; a discussion on how the low back and pelvis function during lifting, carrying, and walking; and a discussion on how pregnancy changes the ability of the low back and pelvis to perform these tasks properly. The author addresses the topic of complications arising from the physical changes that occur during pregnancy and delivery. She demonstrates an exercise program designed to reduce symptoms and to prevent low back and pelvic pain, pro-lapse of the uterus, and incontinence. The video and accompanying exercise booklet, however, do not provide research data or references to support the efficacy of these techniques.

The video uses a narrative format throughout. A variety of methods are used to present critical information graphically, including diagrams, a photograph of an anatomical specimen, real-time ultrasound real-time ultrasound

The subject matter is well organized and presented in a logical sequence. Content is comprehensive, requiring frequent pausing during the viewing to assimilate information.  the stretched (and perhaps torn) pelvic floor musculature, and activating core musculature. Limited basic stretches are included for the postpartum mother. Exercise progression is included.

The content is essential to physical therapists working with a postpartum population. Lay viewers would require additional explanation or clarification of terminology and selection of appropriate exercise options. This video would be beneficial when used as an adjunct to a treatment regimen and is also appropriate for professional physical therapist curricula.
