Port of Los Angeles from Bridge to Breakwater Plan Presented to Board of Harbor Commissioners for Approval.

SAN PEDRO, Calif. -- The "From Bridge to Breakwater The Bridge to Breakwater is an annual footrace held along the Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro, California, featuring 12k and 5k distances. The event debuted in 2006[1].  -- San Pedro Waterfront and Promenade Master Development Plan" sponsored by the Port of Los Angeles The Port of Los Angeles is located on San Pedro Bay in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, approximately 20 miles (30 km) south of downtown. Also called Los Angeles Harbor and WORLDPORT LA  will be voted on by the Board of Harbor Commissioners (BOHC BOHC Beverage of His/Her Choice
BOHC Boron Oxygen Hole Center
) in their September 29, 2004 meeting, to be held at the Port of Los Angeles Administrative Headquarters Building. This plan heralds the completion of a master-planning and community feedback effort that has been 11 months in the making.

If passed, the vote by the BOHC will enable Port staff to begin preliminary design work and preparation of the Environmental Impact Report (EIR EIR n. popular acronym for environmental impact report, required by many states as part of the application to a county or city for approval of a land development or project. (See: environmental impact report) ) on the various aspects of the master plan. It will also establish the master plan document as a benchmark for future development along the waterfront in San Pedro.

Vaughan Davies, project architect, had this to say: "This is the largest and most significant waterfront plan in California and possibly the whole country, and it has been a privilege to be a part of it. All who worked so hard to get to this point should be proud of their achievements. We all look forward to the completion of the next phase, the downtown harbor, and a revitalized 6th Street."

Elements of the plan include a promenade, which serves as a backbone for the entire waterfront, great open spaces, and specific design guidelines, signage, traffic and parking recommendations.

The EE&K/Gafcon design team worked closely with the Port Community Advisory Committee (PCAC PCAC Partially Conserved Axial Vector Current

), the public, Port lessees, neighborhood councils Neighborhood councils are governmental or non-governmental bodies composed of local people who handle neighborhood problems. They can be found in many cities throughout the world. , community groups, elected officials and city agencies to complete this master plan. The design team met regularly with the PCAC Coordinated Plan Subcommittee and other community groups throughout the plan to receive input every step of the way, and on September 21, 2004 the full PCAC voted to endorse the master plan.

June Burlingame-Smith, Chair of the PCAC Coordinated Plan Subcommittee, commented, "Its been a lot of focus and very hard work on both the community and Port side to establish a paradigm to create a new waterfront in San Pedro. This process has shown through dedication, hard work and perseverance that cooperation is better than confrontation. We are all very excited to see the implementation of these efforts and the new groundbreakings to come."

The PCAC's vote follows on the heels of several other community groups' on-record support of the plan, including the Downtown Waterfront Task Force, the CRA See Community Reinvestment Act.  Community Advisory Committee, and the Coastal, Central, and Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Councils.
