Following a career as a missionary in Africa with the Holy Ghost Fathers, he took the lead in opposing the changes within the , who rejected Vatican II and was excommunicated in 1988.

Fellay described the papal election as "a gleam of hope that we may find a way out of the profound crisis that is shaking the Catholic Church."

Pope Benedict had dinner a month later with one of his fiercest liberal critics, Swiss theologian Father Hans Kung. According to the National Catholic Reporter, the two focused their discussions on the dialogue between science and Christian faith and on Kung's work toward the development of a "world ethic" that crosses cultural and religious boundaries.

"It's not that we agree on everything," Kung said. "But the pope has great empathy for the problems of the world and wanted to give a positive sign."
