Benedict is the regnal name of the current Roman pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI (2005–present) and has been the name of fourteen other popes (and three antipopes):

After examining the man's politics, I am not sure any progress will be made in the areas of gay Catholics, prochoice politics or those seeking a church in line with modern culture. In my opinion, the previous pope, while a quiet man, was an abject failure when dealing with these issues, and seemed invisible when the sexual abuse scandals were revealed. The new pontiff will fare no better, as his philosophy is similar to his predecessor's. The church will have even more work dealing with these issues. It is rather a struggle of a church so buried in a fantasy world of old age traditions that it is suspicious of a modern and ever-changing culture. American Catholics need to become more active concerning these issues, otherwise more years of the same conservative and destructive doctrinal oppression will occur. Americans demand change and get nothing from it. If this continues, there will be a split in the ranks of Catholics.

However, there is the possibility that a split might improve things. Having a separate and independent Catholic church with a more enlightened moderate or liberal American pontiff will improve conditions within the faith.
