Polyarylamide Resin Line Reintroduced to U.S.

A broad line of filled and reinforced compounds of an aromatic MXD6 nylon, or polyarylamide, have been reintroduced here by Solvay Advanced Polymers, Inc., Houston. Called Ixef, these materials have been produced by Solvay in Europe since 1984, under license from Mitsubishi Gas Chemical of Japan. They were first marketed here by Solvay in 1991.

Ixef boasts a low degree of crystallinity and low CLTE, comparable to that of light metals and their alloys. Other key characteristics include very low creep, low moisture absorption, high stiffness and strength, good flow in thin sections, good impact strength down to -76 F, excellent abrasion resistance, and excellent surface finish. Price range is $3-7/lb.

Injection molding of the IXEF compounds is said to be easy and comparable to standard nylons. Painting and metalizing reportedly result in very smooth finishes, owing to a resin-rich surface. The line includes 10 grades with 20 to 60% glass, including impact-modified, flame-retardant, and PTFE-lubricated versions. There are also mineral-filled and mineral/glass compounds, plus one with 30% carbon fiber and one unreinforced FR grade. Custom products, including colors, are also available.
