Polka dotted paradise: grow up your room with a fresh pop of color, shape and stunning details. And do it all for cheap!

When Maddie, 13, decided her room was ready for a grow-it-up makeover, her mom told her she had to stick to a $1,000 budget. Not bad. So Maddie turned to GL's fave fave   Informal

Getting creative by redoing old stuff in a bold new way. To get this polka-dotted party started, Maddie rummaged through her family's basement in search of long-forgotten furniture (freebies!) that could be transformed into something special.

Down under, Maddie found a queen-size mattress and an old metal headboard her mom had stashed away. She took some measurements, and rethought her furniture layout. Taking the queen size into consideration, Maddie decided to move her bed near the window, giving her more light in the morning and hiding an ugly radiator.

Maddie had so much luck in the basement that she hit the attic to look for more great stuff. There, she grabbed a small round side table and an antique medicine cabinet.

Maddie's next challenge was to come up with a design scheme for her room. Since she loves bright colors and cheery shapes, going with a pink, green and yellow palette (plus polka dots polka dots

Sofa Shopping

We're not talking about shopping for sofas--we mean you can shop for great room stuff without ever leaving the couch! Maddie grabbed some of her favorite catalogs and flipped through them to find the perfect bedding. Knowing she and her mom were painting the walls bright pink, she went for bold and beautiful. She found green-spotted sheets from Garnet Hill, and a bright-green duvet with white pom-pom trim from Pottery Barn Pottery Barn is an American-based chain of home furnishing stores with stores in the United States and Canada. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Williams-Sonoma, Inc. History  Teen.

Also in PB Teen catalogs were wide pink-striped curtain panels for the windows. Lane suggested hanging two panels on each corner of the bed for added drama. Maddie surfed online for funky multi-green colored hanging beads that would break up the continuity of the pink walls and add a bit of texture.

Maddie did move off the sofa to hit Target for some accessories. She found three rose accent pillows for her bed and two small beaded butterfly pillows. The hot-pink sphere chairs and round pompom pom·pon   also pom·pom

 Decorating

To cut down on the dough, Maddie had to roll up her sleeves and take on a few craft projects.

their bedroom walls. After painting the table and letting it dry completely, she decorated the surface with a large pink daisy cut out from a paper placemat (decoupage glue, baby!). A simple lamp from Target got a little fashion flair with a glued-on flower.

For that headboard that was dug out of the basement, Maddie's mom used her seamstress savvy to sew a slipcover from a queen-size sheet that matched the bedding. "She added cotton batting Cot´ton bat´ting

underneath to give it a softer, more upholstered look," says Maddie.

Deck the Walls

Maddie's own artwork (tie-dye trimmed in pom-pom fringe) was hung on the wall next to the table, and three silk mums were hot-glued to the wall above the lamp. More placemat flower cutouts were decoupaged to Maddie's closet door. Silk flowers purchased from a craft store were hot-glued to trim Maddie's roller window shades.

The crowning touch? Maddie found a small chandelier, which now dangles from the ceiling over her mock-canopy bed. Now she can retreat to her room and feel just like a real queen 'cause this is one girl who has a new room fit for royalty. Cool!
