Policies sought to promote social welfare.

ISLAMABAD, August 24, 2009 (Balochistan Times): The Senate Standing Committee on Social Welfare and Special Education has underlined the need for formulating such policies that may help promote social welfare and mainstreaming of the persons with disabilities to make them active members of the society. The Committee, which met at the Parliament House Monday under the Chairmanship of Senator Prof. Sajid Mir, was given a detailed briefing about the working and performance of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education. The Committee observed that the marginalized and vulnerable segments of the society should be provided maximum facilities so that they may be able to contribute substantially towards healthy growth of the society. It appreciated the performance of the Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal and called for increasing its outreach so that more people could benefit from the schemes and other development initiatives. Members of the Committee suggested that more rehabilitation centres should be established in the country for persons with disabilities. They called upon the ministry to ensure provision of wheelchairs, hearing aids and other necessary equipments to disabled persons. They also stressed for increasing coordination with the provinces to bring improvement in the working and performance of various centres being run by the provinces. The Committee also appreciated the recent cabinet decisions and presidential announcements regarding extending facilities to the persons with disabilities. Earlier, Addl. Secretary Incharge of the M/o Social Welfare and Special Education informed the Committee that the ministry has concentrated on four basic areas including policies and coordination, social welfare of the marginalized segments mainly through PBM, special education and child rights. He also apprised the members of various projects being launched for the uplift and welfare of special persons. Chairman, Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal, Zamarrud Khan also apprised the Committee of the working and performance of PBM. The meeting was attended by Senators Suriya Amiruddin, Farhat Abbas, Haji Ghulam Ali, Farah Aqil, Afia Zia, Muhammad Ali Durrani and Naeem Hussain Chattha, besides senior officials of the ministry and Chairman PBM.
