DORENA - Jay Charles Ferrara went for a walk in the snow Thursday and returned to find his live-in girlfriend dead on the living room floor.

The city police transferred the call at 10:14 p.m. to the sheriff's office, which has jurisdiction outside city limits.

Ferrara gave conflicting stories, but indicated that Sirota was hurt in some way, dispatch records showed. He also told the call-taker that both he and Sirota had been drinking. At one point, he said a gun was in the trailer. Later he said there were no guns in the home.

His former wife said it was the only time Ferrara assaulted her. After his conviction, he completed court-ordered anger management courses and would leave whenever they got into an argument, she said in an interview. The Register-Guard typically doesn't name crime victims.

Ferrara's ex-wife said his life slid downhill after their divorce. "We're better friends now," she said Friday. "He was supposed to help me move today."

Ferrara had been living with Sirota for about two years, and the ex-wife said the pair would argue.
