Poised Cavaliers break Colts.

Byline: Steve Mims The Register-Guard

SPRINGFIELD - Clackamas coach Steve Gustovich kept his message simple as he took the Cavaliers, who have only one senior on the roster, on the road for the playoffs.

"We had nothing to lose, so I told them to go have a good time, and that's what we did," Gustovich said.

The Cavaliers, the No. 4 seed out of the Three Rivers Three Rivers, Que., Canada: see Trois Rivières.  League, rallied past Thurston in the fourth quarter and held on for a 55-51 win in the first round of the Class 4A boys basketball sub-tournament Monday night at Thurston High School Thurston High School is located in Springfield, Oregon in Lane County. Clackamas scored six straight points early in the fourth quarter to take a 48-44 lead and never trailed the rest of the way. Junior Nick Eldridge secured the win with two free throws with 17 seconds remaining.

"Thank goodness," Gustovich said of his team's composure com·po·sure

Dan Daw added a layup to put Clackamas ahead 48-44 while Thurston went five straight possessions without a point as the Cavaliers played a zone defense to try to keep the ball away from Keeling and Bell inside.

"We didn't want those guys to beat us," Gustovich said. "If we were going to lose, we were going to lose outside because they are so good inside."

Thurston missed two free throws, three shots from the field, and committed a turnover while going more than five minutes without a point in the fourth quarter.

"We didn't penetrate one time," Thurston coach Doug Piquette said. "We did not have one penetration basket against their zone in the second half."

Craig Senkel scored inside to get Thurston within 48-46 with 2:14 left to play, then Daw converted a three-point play. Following a basket by Bell, Daw added a layup that put the Cavaliers ahead 53-48 with 1:09 remaining.

Bell banked in a three-pointer with 19.6 seconds left to cut Clackamas' lead to 53-51, but Eldridge made his final two free throws to clinch Clinch, river, c.300 mi (480 km) long, formed by the junction of two forks in SW Va., and flowing generally SW across E Tenn. to the Tennessee River at Kingston.  it.

Bell had 16 points and Keeling added 12 points and seven rebounds for Thurston, which was outrebounded 30-15. Point guard Jamal Sarkez added 11 points for the Colts, who missed 8-of-13 free throws.

`That's the story of our season,' Piquette said. `We had a chance to beat people and we missed free throws and layups.'

Clackamas was 22-for-38 (58 percent) from the field and got a game-high 24 points from Eldridge. Daw added 15 points and five rebounds off the bench, and 6-3 post Matt Ochs had 10 points and seven rebounds.

"That's a lot of points for us; we don't score a lot," Gustovich said. "We were patient on offense, and we didn't force things."
