Poirier plays hero role; Walk-off HR lifts Leominster.

Byline: Kevin O'Malley

LEOMINSTER - Lunenburg High graduate Dan Poirier kept Leominster undefeated with a walk-off, three-run homer last night at McLaughlin Park, giving the hosts an 8-5 victory over defending American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. "I just felt it was a good opportunity for me to get the big hit," Poirier said. "I just wanted to come through for our team. I was seeing the ball good tonight. I was hitting the ball hard all my at-bats. They're a big rival, so it was great to get this one."

Framingham reliever Joe Sylvester found himself in trouble in the bottom of the seventh, giving up a one-out double to Ben Cawley. After retiring Alex Heroux for the second out, Framingham intentionally walked Mike Mercier to bring Poirier to the plate.

"Give them credit, they battled," Framingham manager Bunky Smith said.

"I figured the kid that we walked had a home run and a double, the other kid was 0 for 3 - we took our chances and he beat us."

on a full count to end the top of the seventh and give Leominster a little momentum.

"Two outs, three-two change to get the strikeout on that pitch," Leominster manager Sid Rafuse said. "He's only 16, and that's a big-time pitch from him with very little Legion experience to get that done against this team."

Framingham jumped to an early lead on a leadoff home run by Nate Tardiff in the top of the first.

After Framingham added a pair of runs in the second inning, Leominster took its first lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on two hits as Framingham starter Derek Richards again struggled with his control.
