Daily award highlights volunteers

Each day the Points of Light Foundation in Washington, D.C. awards a "Daily Point of Light" award to an organization or individual for volunteer service to their community.

The Community Drop-In Center

Lawrence, Kan.

The Community Drop-In Center of Lawrence was founded by a handful of Lawrence residents in 1995 because some residents believed the lack of services to the homeless was intolerable. The center is a safe, homelike atmosphere where people who are homeless or low-income can fulfill basic human needs with access to social services.

Coral Springs Police Department Youth Mentoring Program

Coral Springs, Fla.

The Coral Springs Police Department's Youth Mentoring Program was established in 1996 as part of a three-year grant with a partnership between the Department of Juvenile Justice A Department of Juvenile Justice is found in many places. Examples of such a department are:
  • The New South Wales Department of Juvenile Justice
  • The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice
  • The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice
, the City of Coral Springs Police Department and the School Board of Broward County. Program objectives are to improve school attendance and classroom behavior, improve academic performance, establish an ongoing relationship with an adult, develop decision-making skills and develop career interests.

The IMPACT (Inspiring Miracles: Parents and Children Together) Partners of R.G. Cole High School organization was started in 1999 by a high school senior who was troubled by the isolation of the special needs students on campus. Currently, the program has 95 members, with 90 juniors and seniors, which represents 71 percent of the upper-class population at Cole High School.

Rum River Interfaith Caregivers, Inc. Princeton, Minn.

Volunteers of Rum River Interfaith Caregivers, Inc. was begun in 1996 because of an unmet need for transportation and respite care Respite Care

David and Connie Amtower give their hearts and time to frail seniors and those who are disabled. The Amtowers assist seniors by running errands, helping with light housekeeping chores, providing shopping assistance, and other tasks as needed as needed prn. Barbara Pittman

Philadelphia, Pa,

Barbara Pittman survived an abusive marriage and now she volunteers as an advocate for abused women and their children. Pittman runs a support group for women in prison who have fought back against abuse in self-defense, is a member of the Coalition for the Right to Live in Peace and continues to be an advocate for abused women on state and national levels.

Gabriel Chavez

Las Cruces, N.M.

Gabriel Chavez was a driving force in the formation and expansion of the El Caldito Soup Kitchen and is now an integral part of its Gleaning Harvesting for free distribution to the needy, or for donation to a nonprofit organization for ultimate distribution to the needy, an agricultural crop that has been donated by the owner.  Committee. Howard and Nancy Terry

Houston, Texas

In 1986, Howard and Nancy Terry set up a private foundation, The Terry Foundation, to help financially needy children in Texas attend public colleges and universities. One of the guiding principles of the Foundation is that the scholarship recipients are expected to give back to their community by serving others.

Hector Casado

Ocala, Fla.

Hector Casado has been a Guardian Ad Litem A guardian appointed by the court to represent the interests of Infants, the unborn, or incompetent persons in legal actions.

Guardians are adults who are legally responsible for protecting the well-being and interests of their ward, who is usually a minor.
 volunteer since 1997, in which he speaks for the best interest of children brought into the judicial system.

His bilingual abilities enable him to be effective in helping Hispanic children.

He is currently in the process of establishing parenting and anger management classes tailored specifically for the Hispanic population, targeted at those families whose children are involved in court proceedings.

George Hallett

Fresno, Calif.

George Hallett has volunteered in the Senior Companions Program since 1984. In this role, he has provided respite, companionship, and support to the families of more than 90 hospice and Alzheimer patients, four hours per day, five days per week.

Paul and Alcina Dadurian

Sandia, Texas

Paul and Alcina Dadurian run Floyd's Christian Restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas Corpus Christi is a coastal city and the county seat of Nueces CountyGR6 in the U.S. state of Texas. It is part of the region known as South Texas. . The Dadurians load up their vehicles with meals and distribute them to the poor on the back streets in several cities four to five evenings a week. They have been feeding the homeless and helping the needy everyday since 1989 without federal, state, or city funds.

Carroll Henderson

Bozeman, Mt.

Carroll Henderson's accomplishments are many, from his years on the hospital board, as a Red Cross volunteer and eventually Montana State Red Cross Chairman, member of the Methodist Church Board, to member of the Boys and Girls boys and girls

Regina Dayton. created a community service program called SHINE (Students Helping In Neighborhoods Everywhere) in 1998 with just 20 students. Their activities began small with coat drives,, flowers to Columbine High School Columbine High School is a secondary school in unincorporated Jefferson County, Colorado. The school is located at 6201 South Pierce Street, one mile west of the Littleton city limits and half a mile south of the Denver city/county line.  and planting flowers at hospice. The program now includes more than 300 students and their activities range from AIDS walks to food drives; from Special Olympics to leaf raking for the elderly.

Javier Santiago

Ridgewood, N.Y.

Learning Leaders uses trained volunteers to help meet the educational needs of students in public schools. Javier Santiago is a Learning Leader. He has adopted an entire class of children who will stay together through elementary school. Throughout his time of service, he has impacted approximately 30 to 40 children.

Marilyn Weaver

Rochester, N.Y.

Marilyn Weaver has been a school volunteer in West Irondequiot for 10 years. She began her service as a classroom mother, then a block parent, cultural arts organizer, third grade graduation coordinator, and finally co-chair of a two-day Outdoor Education Experience. In addition, she developed and coordinated the Reading At Home Program.
