Plug Into the Media Circuit.California's electrical flow may shut down now and then, but a new business pipeline is flowing for CPAs who take advantage of CalCPA's public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most programs. When potential clients look for CPAs or financial planners via major search engines, Freedman's name appears again and again. "When someone sees you more than once or twice in a database search, your credibility rises quickly," he says. He subsequently has participated as a source for more newspaper stories and Web sites, as well as spearheaded the East Bay Chapter's effort to enlist a team to work the phones during a televised tax season call-in show. Not every member who participates as a media resource is guaranteed to gain business directly from the experience, but it happens. CPASources--This e-mail listserve includes a community of CalCPA members who are media training graduates and interested in developing or maintaining relationships with reporters. Media Background Sessions--Special meetings between members and journalists to educate media on technical or hot topical areas within the profession.
