Degussa AG's High Performance Polymers group in Germany has been licensed to use a special laser-activated additive additive

. This process permits making 3D molded interconnect devices (MIDs) with circuits selectively plated on their surfaces. Degussa (U.S. office is Degussa Corp. in Parsippany, N.J.) is using the laser-activated additive in its Vestodur CL radiation-crosslinkable PBT compounds formulated for short-term resistance to temperatures of up to 400 C (750 F) for reflow soldering Reflow soldering is the most common means to attach a surface mounted component to a circuit board, and typically consists of applying solder paste, positioning the devices, and reflowing the solder in a conveyorized oven.  of electronic components.

With the additive technology from German laser supplier LPKF Laser & Electronics AG, producers of MIDs can eliminate production steps and cut cost. A moving laser beam is used to trace the paths of highdensity circuitry on the molded part. Where the laser beam activates the additive, the PBT becomes electroplatable.
