Plastomers vie for role in TPO roof membranes. (Keeping up with Materials).

Using ethylene-octene plastomers made with metallocene catalysts as the "rubber" in TPO (Twisted Pair Only) Refers to the use of twisted pair wire when other options are available. For example, a TPO suffix at the end of 3com Ethernet adapter model numbers indicates the card has only an RJ45 connector.  compounds produces a superior material for single-ply roofing membranes, according to according to

a paper presented at the recent SPE SPE - Software Practice and Experience  Polyolefins 2000 conference in Houston Researchers from ExxonMobil Chemical, Houston, showed that TPOs based on Exact plastomers of about 0.9 g/cc and 1.0 M1 display better thermal and physical properties than a competitive reactor TPO (RTPO RTPO Regional Transportation Planning Organization

) used extensively in this application.

Experiments with different plastomers yielded best results with Exact 0201 (0.902 g/cc), owing to its relatively high crystallinity (37%) and [T.sub.g] (-98.6 F). Its high Vicat softening temperature, approaching 194 F, is believed to be beneficial in roofing applications where service temperatures can reach 158 F for a white roof and 194 F for a black roof.

ExxonMobil found the optimal TPO formulation contains about 50% Exact plastomer 0201, 20% PP, and 80% magnesium hydroxide magnesium hydroxide: see milk of magnesia.  flame retardant. Such TPOs reportedly exhibit excellent welding characteristics. Tel: (281) 870-6000, www.exxonmobilchemical.com
