SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 7, 1998--The LEGO Group Lego Group is a family-owned company based in Billund, Denmark and best known for the manufacture of Lego-brand toys.

The company was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Christiansen.
, today, celebrated the start of attraction construction of LEGOLAND California Legoland California is the third Legoland park. Located in Carlsbad, California, it opened on March 20, 1999. It is split into eight sections which include The Beginning, Dino Island, Explore Village, Fun Town, Knight's Kingdom, Miniland USA, Pirate Shores and Imagination Zone.  by revealing plans for all attractions to be featured in the Park when it opens to the public in the spring of 1999. The only family park of its kind in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. , the 128-acre LEGOLAND California is a place to discover, explore, imagine, practice, enjoy, laugh, experience, test, adventure as well as play.

By stimulating creativity and imagination through hands-on recreation, LEGOLAND will carry on the LEGO Group tradition of taking children's play seriously. "The LEGO brand symbolizes creativity and quality play-material for all children and LEGOLAND California embodies that philosophy while recognizing that 'play' is a child's most important work," stated Bill Haviluk, President, LEGOLAND California, and Senior Vice President/COO Global Family Attractions.

"The LEGO Group has always focused on children. Our task is to stimulate children's imagination and creativity, encouraging them to explore, experience and express their own world. At LEGOLAND California, we help provide the tools for this expression, in a special sort of theme park that families can enjoy together," commented Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen (born December 27, 1947) was the chief executive of Lego between 1979 and 2004. "For more than 50 years the LEGO Group's core business has been construction toys. It seems only fitting that the beginning of construction on the first park to be built in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Six distinctive play areas, Imagination Zone, Castle Hill, Fun Town, Village Green, Miniland and The Ridge will feature attractions, rides, opportunities to build, areas to explore and more than 1,000 LEGO models fabrickated from 30 million LEGO elements. The Park is designed so that kids and their families are part of the entertainment -- not just entertained.

"Learn as you play" could be the motto for the Imagination Zone -- a place for 'LEGO Maniac's' to call their own. Play workshops will have both structured play and free play areas. The master educational division, called LEGO DACTA(R) -- the word "DACTA" comes from the word "didactic," meaning "systematic instruction" -- works with children and teachers to develop products and key curriculum support material for use in schools. LEGO DACTA aims to provide the very best tools for learning through play. LEGO DACTA combines the building bricks with specially designed curriculum materials and software and interface programs just waiting to be explored and put to the ultimate kid test. -0-
