Planning for Effective Training: A Guide for Law Enforcement Instructors and Trainers.

As many trainers around the country may be discovering, when budgets become tight, one of the first areas often targeted for cuts is training. Still, law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. This may be a local or state police, federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  must provide competent instruction so that officers can carry out their duties in a professional and legally sound manner.

Planning for Effective Training is an especially helpful resource designed specifically for today's police trainers. The book presents a simplified, step-by-step guide that can be used by both experienced instructors and those new to police training.

The text begins with a brief but useful questionnaire questionnaire,

that asks readers to rate their present knowledge of specific training procedures and practices. Each question then directs readers to a chapter in the book that discusses the subject matter introduced in the question. In this way, the book can be tailored to meet the specific needs of trainers by allowing them to go directly to chapters that cover topics in which they may need further information or assistance.

Throughout the guide, the authors emphasize making the best use of limited training resources. However, they stress that restricted budgets do not relieve re·lieve

police agencies from the responsibility of conducting competent and thorough training. Reduced funding simply means that instructors must focus on the most efficient, effective training methods.

The final part of the book discusses useful ways to assess training results. Many instructors believe that their training programs are successful, but they may lack firm evidence to support this conclusion. This section of the book assists trainers in obtaining unbiased and objective evidence that can help them to decide if their courses achieve the desired results. It then suggests ways to modify courses so that they do achieve established goals and objectives.

Planning for Effective Training presents a thorough discussion of what trainers should do to design, carry out, evaluate, and--if necessary--revise a course of study. For this reason, the book is an invaluable resource for anyone involved in police training.
