:PLNR), a worldwide leader in specialty display solutions, today announced a strategic relationship with Matrox Graphics, the leading manufacturer of graphics solutions for professionals, that enhances its Dome EX line of diagnostic displays to increase grayscale In computing, a grayscale or greyscale digital image is an image in which the value of each pixel is a single sample. Displayed images of this sort are typically composed of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest, though in  resolution and deliver 10-bit image data to the healthcare market. This partnership continues to support Planar's strategic goals to expand into specialty display markets by providing the medical imaging market with multiple display configuration options.

Planar and Matrox together designed a 10-bit display solution to deliver imaging detector data to the end user more accurately. Planar displays have always had 10-bit capabilities, but were waiting for a graphics control board that is able to deliver this depth of information to its displays. Historically, because of software and hardware limitations, grayscale LCD monitors were only capable of displaying 256 calibrated cal·i·brate

This partnership enables the Dome EX grayscale products to display 1,024 DICOM (medical, standard) DICOM - (From Digital Imaging and COmmunications in Medicine) A standard developed by ACR-NEMA (American College of Radiology - National Electrical Manufacturer's Association) for communications between medical imaging devices.  calibrated gray shades - four times the resolution of the standard grayscale LCD technology typically used in medical displays.

Matrox is driving the Planar Dome EX line of displays at full grayscale resolution by supplying custom 10-bit enabled boards, giving PACs software vendors the ability to provide higher resolution images on Planar's Dome display systems.

"Planar's Dome monitors are able to display four times the grayscale resolution of standard LCD displays as a result of this partnership with Matrox," said Patrick Herguth, general manager of Planar's Medical Business Unit. "In line with the company's strategic initiatives, Planar continues to demonstrate the innovation and leadership necessary to offer performance consistent with the demanding specifications desired by medical imaging customers. The Matrox MED[TM] board affords end users the ability to more fully visualize the data captured by modern medical scanning devices."

"Matrox has long recognized the need for 10-bit solutions in medical imaging, and has been providing its customers with 10-bit display controller boards for many years," said George Rigas, business development manager, medical imaging, Matrox Graphics Inc. "We are pleased to expand our partnership with Planar by providing a 10-bit display controller solution for its Dome EX customers, who can benefit from the enhanced image quality it provides."
