The purpose of the assignment is to improve systems and procedures for gathering, disseminating, and using environmental health information to enhance public health programs in the City. It is designed to be compatible with national efforts and data management standards from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center.  and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and .

PlanGraphics is helping DOHMH personnel assess current information systems and training needs for environmental health tracking. With the DOHMH leading this effort, the project will include a wide spectrum of public health professionals from multiple City agencies. Information will be gathered through a series of survey forms and focus group sessions. PlanGraphics will prepare a number of deliverables, culminating in recommendations and a plan for information technology implementation. This plan will provide a foundation for an integrated information management infrastructure for managing environmental health information.

PlanGraphics, in cooperation with the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT), is also providing IT design and implementation services for several key initiatives that support the EPHT program. This includes Web-based tools for a database survey, applying Geosupport services for the DOHMH Adult Lead Database and the design and development of a prototype application for integration of information from several disparate databases. PlanGraphics is also providing general support for GIS and other information technology tasks.
