) today unveiled an extraordinary exhibit highlighting the contributions of African Americans to the field of messaging. The 8 by 10 foot exhibit, currently on display in the lobby of the company's world headquarters in Stamford, CT, features photographs of the inventors and a timeline of their accomplishments. At the center of the exhibit is a 19th century, wooden post office counter-top unit, used by John T. Jackson in the general store he operated. Jackson was commissioned as postmaster postmaster - The electronic mail contact and maintenance person at a site connected to the Internet or UUCPNET. Often, but not always, the same as the admin. The Internet standard for electronic mail (RFC 822) requires each machine to have a "postmaster" address; usually it is  for Alanthus, Virginia in 1891 at the age of 29 and served in that position for 49 years. The unit is on loan from the Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum

The exhibit was originally conceived by Pitney Bowes as a tribute to Black History Month and highlights more than a dozen noteworthy events such as Granville T. Burridge and Newman R. Marshman's invention of the typewriter and Henry T. Sampson's invention of an electric cell that converted gamma rays Gamma rays

directly into electricity, which laid the groundwork for the development of the cellular phone.

Pitney Bowes' long history of technological innovation and commitment to diversity prompted the company to develop the exhibit. "One of Pitney Bowes' core strengths is applying innovative technology to help companies reduce the cost, enhance the impact and increase the effectiveness of end-to-end mail and messaging management," said Sheryl Y. Battles, Executive Director, External Affairs, Pitney Bowes Inc. "We are proud to introduce this exhibit which highlights the innovation that diversity has brought to business communications. We could think of no more appropriate backdrop against which to unveil it than during Black History Month. We will continue to explore the contributions of women and people of color Noun 1. people of color - a race with skin pigmentation different from the white race (especially Blacks)
