Pioneer introduces a 100-disc CD-ROM jukebox with 12X read capabilities; one of the fastest jukeboxes available with a sustained data transfer rate of 1,800KB/second.

 storage products, Tuesday announced a new 100-disc CD-ROM jukebox See CD-ROM server.  with 12X capabilities. Available in May, the Pioneer 12X jukebox has a suggested retail price of $10,495 when configured with four readers and $11,495 when configured with two readers and one writer.

According to Paul Meyhoefer, manager of product development for Pioneer New Media Technologies, "The new 12X jukebox addresses the demand for a mass storage product that offers increased speed, optimum performance and CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution.  capabilities -- all in a comprehensive unit for near on-line storage."

Reading at 12X and recording at 4X, the Pioneer 12X jukebox is an ideal storage solution for frequently accessing data on networks, data archival, imaging management, multimedia and other applications in government, defense, corporate, medical, banking, insurance, legal and other personal computing environments. The jukebox features a disc load time of less than three seconds and its picker mechanism provides high-speed access for data retrieval in a network environment. Other enhanced features include two removable 50-disc magazines and a convenient keypad and mail slot allowing users to load and retrieve discs on command without having to open the jukebox door.

The jukebox also supports all major CD standards and formats including CD-ROM, CD-DA (Compact Disc-Digital Audio) The original compact disc format developed by Sony and Philips in the 1980s, which was designed for audio only. Since "CD" is used loosely for all Compact Disc formats, the CD-DA designation differentiates a music disc or player , XA Mode, Yellow Book and Orange Book.
