Pioneer days.

In the January 17 issue, John Morgan Wilson writes about Hollywood actors who come out of the closet afar decades of being in the closet ["There Won't Be Trumpets"]. He believes that these people should have come out of the closet decades ago to support the gay rights movement. I think Wilson is being very shortsighted about the whole issue. He writes as if the gay rights movement is over and we are looking back at the movement retrospectively. Quite to the contrary, the gay rights movement is still in its adolescence. Twenty or 30 years from now, some writer will be thanking the likes of Tab Hunter, Richard Chamberlain, and George Takei for coming out so early in the gay rights movement to support the cause. The '80s, '90s, and today really have been just a warm-up for the gay rights movement. ANDREW COLES Houston, Texas
