Pinpointing acupuncture.I would like to share, some thoughts on "Everybody Hurts" by Melissa Knopper (Your Health, July/August 2004). It is very beneficial to the general public to be exposed to well-researched and meaningful information about therapies other than those offered by Western medicine. But the only acupuncture source Knopper cites is The American Academy of Medical Acupuncture American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA), n.pr U.S. organization of practicing acupuncturists who hold medical degrees. Membership requirements include two hundred and twenty hours of academy-approved training and two years of practical acupuncture , which represents physicians certified (or not, depending on the state) in the technique. Knopper didn't mention non-MD licensed acupuncturists, and the article advises readers to seek treatment only from doctors "board-certified" in acupuncture. However, there are no acupuncture boards for physicians. In most states, physicians can practice acupuncture without any training. A few states require some instruction in the technique, but not clinical training or exams. In contrast, non-MD licensed acupuncturists complete 1,825 to 3,000 hours of classroom instruction and do a supervised clinical internship.
