Her latest series, the Tortall Legend, continues her fine work. Sixteen-year-old Beka Cooper is a product of the rough-and-tumble Lower City. She has become a 'Puppy,' apprenticed to two worthy 'Dogs' who serve the King as protectors For the 1970s television series made by Gerry Anderson, see The Protectors Protectors was a team of fictional superheroes that starred in the eponymous title published by Malibu Comics. of the city of Corus. Because Beka Cooper is older than the traditional Tortall heroine, it stands to have the voice sound older. More than this is that the story, set in a crime-ridden area of the capital, has an overriding world-weary flavor that again carries over nicely into the narration. Beka Cooper has lived a rough life in a rough world and chosen a rough profession, and Dennaker's narration reflects all of this. However, her tone also has a light touch to it, which is essential to both support the light-hearted moments among minor characters and highlight the hopeful elements of the story. No character sounds over the top or out of place in the cast, and it's a relatively large cast of minor characters. The question is, "When does the next one come out?"
