Web Self-Service Solution Reduces Cost and Complexity Barriers to
Greater Use of Videoconferencing Systems
PictureTel Announces "Buy-Two-Get-One-Free" Introductory Offer
1414c, a subsidiary of PictureTel Corporation, (Nasdaq:PCTL), the world leader in visual collaboration, today announced Conference1-2-3(SM), its H.320-based multipoint videoconferencing service.
Leveraging PictureTel's processes and expertise gained from delivering multipoint conferencing service to volume customers for over five years, Conference1-2-3 provides the general conference market 24x7 Web-access to the same high-quality bridging service.
Priced at $49 per site per hour within the U.S. - including port and ISDN network charges - Conference1-2-3 dramatically reduces the cost of H.320 videoconferencing bridging service. Importantly, Conference1-2-3's Web-based, self-service scheduling reduces the administrative overhead and time consuming process associated with set up and testing.
In addition, the automatic call launching feature minimizes the uncertainty in executing inter- and intra-organizational videoconferencing meetings. Conference1-2-3 sidesteps traditional lead times to using bridging service with its automatic call launching, 24-hour connection testing and guaranteed port availability.
Platform independent, Conference1-2-3 supports conferencing sessions among any H.320 systems.
1414c also unveiled a Conference1-2-3 introductory special offer. Through July 2000, users that hold two conference sessions, get a third session at no additional charge.
Users access Conference1-2-3 by logging on to www.conference123.com, completing an intuitive Web form that includes user and room profiles, and their conference information. Service options include continuous presence layout options, audio add-on ports, Meet-Me/Dial In Service, and data rates up to 384 KBPS.
Payment options include major credit cards and purchase orders through secure Web links.
"Conference1-2-3's Web-portal interface transforms multipoint videoconferencing from a complex, technical function into a straightforward point-and-click exercise," states Jeanine Lovejoy, IT Operations/Telecommunications Manager at Fenwick & West LLP. "As the service reduces complexity, its real-time scheduling capability, aggressive pricing, and automatic testing features allow us to better leverage existing investments in H.320 videoconferencing equipment. The net impact, is that Conference1-2-3 reduces the barriers to content-rich interaction for our remote personnel - unlocking important organizational productivity advantages."
"Conference1-2-3 allows my staff to walk into the conference room just prior to a scheduled meeting and "Voila!" the bridge automatically calls out and connects the units. It is great tool for a multi-office law firm such as ours."
"Conference1-2-3 empowers organizations to better leverage their investment in installed H.320 systems," said Mr. Wayne McAllister, vice president of operations, 1414c. "Conference1-2-3 reduces the cost, and critically, the complexity associated with the videoconferencing. As with all PictureTel solutions, our objective is to enable intuitive, rich media interaction - unencumbered by technology. Users will gain advantage from using our Web-based conferencing portal complete with online help tools featuring videoconferencing tips and guidelines, stored user profiles, same day conferencing capability, online modifications capability and much more."
"Videoconferencing is not a customers' core business, so executives are often intimidated by technical complexity, and as a result have to draw on the telecommunications and/or MIS department(s) to work with a third-party communications company to schedule a call," noted Andrew Davis, analyst and managing partner, Wainhouse Research. "The expense and potential for technical difficulties increases as you add to the number of locations participating in the meeting. PictureTel is simplifying the user's experience by combining intuitive Web self-service with call launching and connectivity testing. Further, as Conference1-2-3 resets the price-point, it promises to increase demand for high-quality H.320 videoconferencing from within the installed base, and boost demand from new audiences."
