Some recommendations from Wall Street brokerage houses on Southland stocks:

Pic 'N' Save Inc.: Investment advisory service Standard & Poor's said this Dominguez-based discount retailer has "speculative attraction" based upon projected improving earnings in 1992. If sales improve next year, profit margins could rise sharply, said S&P.

Unocal Corp.: The Los Angeles-based oil major is not a good buy on Wall Street, according to a report issued by brokerage Smith Barney.

Unocal's West Coast refining and marketing operations remain troubled and earnings per share should fall to $1.18 this year compared with $1.71 last year, said Smith Barney. Soft natural gas prices hurt Unocal gas production earnings. Still, Unocal earnings should rise to $1.70 a share next year, and $2.32 a share in 1993, said Smith Barney.

Sunrise Medical Inc: Smith Barney initiated coverage of this Torrance-based medical products manufacturer with a buy rating. Sunrise is a market leader in key business segments, including wheelchair manufacturing, crutches, special beds, wall garb bars, and patient lifters. The demographics of the aging population augur well for the $172 million-in-sales Sunrise, said Smith Barney. The brokerage house said Sunrise has a "fanatical" devotion to product quality, particularly expressed in its manufacturing process.

Teradata Corp.: The Los Angeles-based manufacturer of computer systems is an aggressive buy, according to a recent report issued by San Francisco-based Montgomery Securities. Although Teradata won't earn much in fiscal 1991, earnings should rise to $1.30 a share in fiscal 1992 ended June 30, said Montgomery.
