Schimmel produces high-quality pianos. Schimmel was founded on May 2, 1885, by Wilhelm Schimmel as a modest, one-man operation in a small rented workshop in Neuschoenefeld, near Leipzig. Schimmel was appointed as purveyor to the courts of the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar (1899) and the King of Romania (1909), honors seldom conferred on newly established firms.

In 1927 the presidency of the company was passed on to Wilhelm Arno Schimmel, the founder's son. Two years later the company was relocated to Braunschweig. World War II briefly interrupted piano production, but the company soon resumed operations, and by 1948 Schimmel pianos were being exhibited at the trade fair in Hannover.

In 1961, following the sudden death of Wilhelm Arno Schimmel, his son, Nikolaus Wilhelm Schimmel, assumed the presidency.

In 1995 Schimmel celebrated its 110th year in business. In just three generations this family enterprise has grown from the most modest of beginnings to one of Europe's leading piano manufacturers. Approximately 55 percent of Schimmel production is for export.

The Schimmel family tradition will be continued in the fourth generation. Hannes Schimmel-Vogel, husband of Viola Schimmel, is following Nikolaus W. Schimmel in his position as president beginning July 2003. Gabriela Schimmel will be responsible for public and artist relations.

Despite a worldwide slump in piano sales, the company was able to further strengthen its position in the industry. Probably the most important contributing factor to Schimmel's success is the dedication to cater to an exclusive clientele with excellent pianos, a clientele that is looking for top quality in sound, workmanship, and touch, exquisite cabinetry, and, above all, a lasting investment, and who are willing and in a position to pay for these things. Only one year later Schimmel presented further milestones of its quality offensive: the new 8'4" Schimmel concert grand CO 256, the further developed 7' chamber concert grand CC 213, the completely new upright model 49" M 124 TC Retro that represents a symbiosis of traditional design and the highest piano manufacturing standards, and finally the smaller uprights, 46" 116 ST and 116 AD Art Deco in very attractive designs.

In February 2003 Schimmel also began producing under the new brand name "Vogel by Schimmel." These grand pianos for the American market are made in a company-owned plant in Kalisz, Poland. There, under close technical supervision, instruments under the brand name Vogel will be produced. The brand name Schimmel will be reserved for the top-of-the-line instruments from Brunswick. With this step, Schimmel will be achieving multiple goals: the strengthening of its dealers, the profitable expansion of its line of products, and the strengthening of the production site in Brunswick.

Despite the important role played by automatic machines and computers in increasing production efficiency, Schimmel still performs most of the quality building operations by handcraftsmanship in order to maintain its worldwide reputation for excellence.

Other important factors are the creativity of the Schimmel management, the motivation and high training standard of its production staff. In the German piano industry, the apprentice/journeyman/master craftsman system still prevails. The supervisors at Schimmel are referred to as "Meister" because they are master craftsmen.

Seiler is a German company that produces high-quality pianos and distributes them through its dealer network worldwide. Piano production continued to grow with 430 piano-builders at the time of his death in 1923.

Johannes's son in law, Anton Seiler-Dutz, took control of the company and expanded it even further; Seiler became the largest pianoforte factory in Eastern Germany. Pianists and other musicians, among the Enrico Caruso, Arthur Nikisch, and Rugger Leoncavallo, used Seller instruments in pursuit of their careers. Seller provided the pianos required by the Bayreuth Festival, and its instruments are found in concert halls around the world.

At the end of the Second World War Seller lost its headquarters and factory in Liegnitz, but not the expertise and experience acquired in the course of over 100 years of piano manufacture. In 1945 Steffen Seiler, Anton Seiler's son, risked his life to save the company's moulds for the cast-iron fames and design drawings. These enabled him to re-launch the manufacture of Seller pianos according to the Liegnitz model, first in Denmark and later, in 1961, to its current home in Kitzingin, Germany. During Steffen's tenure many technical innovations were implemented, among them patented techniques including the Membrator System, the Tonal Volume Stabilizer, and the Super Magnet Repetition Action. The DouVox System was revolutionary and the first to strike a bridge to the 21st century by integrating the new technique of digital sound generation into its grand and vertical pianos.
