It is actually a revision of volume 3 in the same series. The original book served as one of the first texts in geriatrics geriatrics (jĕrēă`trĭks), the branch of medicine concerned with conditions and diseases of the aged. Many disabilities in old age are caused by or related to the deterioration of the circulatory system (see arteriosclerosis), e.g. and served that purpose well. What is not immediately clear is why a revision of volume 3 would be given a new volume number. Also, the preface to this second edition does not state how this edition differs from the first edition. One obvious and welcome change in the edition is the use of larger print. The text includes chapters on rehabilitation rehabilitation: see physical therapy. of elderly persons, biological aspects of aging, older adult learning, assessment of psychosocial psychosocial /psy·cho·so·cial/ (si?ko-so´shul) pertaining to or involving both psychic and social aspects. psy·cho·so·cial adj. It is underpinned by the basic science of pharmacology, with added focus on the application of pharmacological principles and methods in the real world. , the importance of the family in caring for elderly people, cardiac considerations, and comprehensive functional assessment of elderly individuals. All of the chapters have updated material and improved illustrations. The material on the biological aspects of aging and clinical pharmacology has been significantly improved; ironically, these chapters were strong in the first edition. The chapter on cardiac considerations has expanded illustrations of exercises that can be done with a partner who helps with the stretching and offers resistance. This foundational text is a mainstay of geriatrics sections of libraries for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. The material is not generally comprehensive, but it is basic, relevant, and well-presented. As in all good reference volumes, the chapters include lengthy bibliographies that direct the reader to more extensive work on these topics. I recommend this text to all health care providers who work with elderly people and as a basic text for use in entry-level programs. Carol M Davis, EdD, PT |
