Photo Opportunity: Senator Santorum Tours Family House.

WHO: U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa)

WHAT: United States Senator Rick Santorum will visit Family House

Neville to tour the facility and meet guests including

transplant candidates and recipients.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 18, 3:00-4:00 p.m.

WHERE: Family House Neville, 514 North Neville Street (Oakland section

of Pittsburgh)

WHY: Family House is an independent not-for-profit 501 (c)(3)

organization and the largest hospital hospitality house in the

nation. A special "home away from home" for adult patients

and/or families who must travel to Pittsburgh for treatment of

serious or life-threatening illnesses, Family House offers an

affordable, comfortable and supportive environment which does

much to ease the emotional and financial burden that frequently

accompanies long-term illness.

During his tour, Sen. Santorum will meet and speak with a

variety of guests including transplant candidates and

recipients. His visit coincides with National Organ and Tissue

Donor Awareness Week (April 16-22). Senator Santorum has been a

strong proponent of Department of Health and Human Services

(HHS) regulations that call for changes to the organ allocation

system and has sponsored or supported legislation to protect the

interests of patients. Under the current system, organs are

allocated on a geographic basis with little regard to medical

urgency. This results in several inequities, including extended

waiting periods and disproportionately high numbers of waiting

list deaths in some parts of the country, including in western

Pennsylvania.

Approximately 7,000 families annually use Family House which

operates a total of 97 guest rooms at three facilities in the

Oakland section of Pittsburgh. Patients from a number of local

hospitals including, UPMC Health System, the Oakland Veteran's

Administration, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and The

Western Pennsylvania Hospital, are accommodated each year.

Ground-breaking for a much needed fourth facility to be located

at 5245 Centre Avenue in Shadyside will take place in May, 2000.
