Using the WebCine product line, Philips' end-to-end MPEG-4 solution, users can receive rights-managed MPEG-4 content transmitted over open networks, including the Internet.

The demonstration includes secure content purchase and streaming using the Philips WebCine MPEG-4 Player enabled with InterTrust Digital Rights Management (DRM). This secure content delivery system allows providers to manage the purchase and use of content over its entire lifecycle. Content is only playable on certified, tamper-resistant WebCine players after the user has satisfied the rules for its use. The capability to stream and download secure Standards-Based MPEG-4 content will enable content providers to widely distribute secure content and generate additional revenues.

"The major obstacles for content owners for distributing content on the Internet have been interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  of the content on consumer devices and protection of content against unauthorized use," said Ahmad Ouri, Vice President and General Manager of Philips Digital Networks' MP4Net group. "Philips has teamed up with InterTrust, a leader in DRM, to demonstrate that these obstacles can be overcome with the use of MPEG-4, an ISO Standard, and the security and rights management elements that are enabled by InterTrust's DRM technology," added Ouri.

"We are delighted to offer a secure MPEG-4 solution with Philips," said Talal Shamoon, Senior VP of Media at InterTrust. "This solution leverages the full power of the InterTrust DRM platform's streaming support capabilities and Philips' expertise in multimedia processing. Both Philips and InterTrust view DRM enabled MPEG-4 as a primary content distribution environment for electronic media distribution."

The Philips WebCine solution fully supports the MPEG-4 ISO Standard, insuring interoperability on PCs and consumer devices, as well as supporting the advanced multimedia features of MPEG-4. With MPEG-4, operators gain the benefits of a streaming standard that includes built-in support for video, audio, graphics, data objects, and security to allow personalization Custom tailoring information to the individual. On the Web, personalization means returning a page that has been customized for the user, taking into consideration that person's habits and preferences.  of content and interactive links or elements. Further, MPEG-4 supports a wide variety of distribution and delivery schemes that include broadcast, cable, and satellite services, as well as the Internet. Philips will show MPEG-4 devices and applications running on cable set-top boxes The cable TV box that sits on "top" of the TV "set," although it is often located several feet away in an equipment rack.
