NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 17, 2000

The "Connected Home" Comes to Life in the High Styled Rooms of

Leading Designers with Philips' Smart Products and New

Philips Electronics is offering consumers a first-hand experience of the "Connected Home," bringing it to life in a 105-year-old townhouse town·house or town house

A Blueprint of the Infinite Home: The Residential Gateway with

Multiple Applications

The concept of a home that breaks functional and geographical divides is on display at the Show House. With the Philips Remote Home Control technology concept, the home is an infinite entity, accessible wherever you are - even if that is on the other side of the world. From interior designer Charles Spada's reading room at the Kips Bay Show House, Philips Remote Home Control lets him visit his headquarters in Boston. Video cameras relay live images displayed on his Philips FlatTV, running through a secure server. This home server can also function as a time-lapse VCR VCR: see videocassette recorder.

In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. , the designer can also control appliances and devices (e.g. lights, coffee machine, alarm clock). Monitoring and control don't end when he leaves home or his office. The Philips research concept also makes it possible to access devices in the home using his wireless personal digital assistant (i.e. a Palm Pilot).

Behind this functionality lies the server. In the compact form of a television set-top box The cable TV box that sits on "top" of the TV "set," although it is often located several feet away in an equipment rack. The set-top box descrambles the premium channels and provides a tuner for the higher cable numbers that very old TVs did not support. , it has multiple applications and functions, at the same time acting as a firewall that protects the network of devices, including PCs, that run off it. Around the clock, the server also helps Mr. Spada interface with and manage his business better. For example, his server could allow him to send and receive faxes, store data, audio and image files for access from home or work, and playback up to 200 hours of stored MP3 music from three states away. This Remote Home Control concept was developed by the Philips Research labs in Silicon Valley.

"Technology is the word of the day, but the comfort of home is still paramount to most people," says Charles Spada. "The challenge we face as designers is to keep a sense of home while fitting in new technologies that actually make living easier. There are now these powerful systems that keep you connected to that all-important sense of home and let you check in on things while you're away."

Make Things Better

Interconnectivity in the home also relies on a new breed of products with ambient intelligence In computing, ambient intelligence (AmI) refers to electronic environments that are sensitive and responsive to the presence of people. Ambient intelligence is a vision on the future of consumer electronics, telecommunications and computing that was originally developed in  - smart products to simplify your life. These products don't need you to tell them how they should work; they learn from you to give you what you want, when you want it.

There are countless video clips available on Web sites for streaming as well as subscription services that offer TV programs and movies for downloading.  products that are changing the way we view television. Charles Spada's reading room also features the Philips Personal TV Receiver with TiVo service, which enables its user to customize and control his television viewing experience by teaching the receiver the types of shows he likes using a simple "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" button on the remote control. These preferences are collected daily by the TiVo service to match them with the shows available, and the Philips receiver automatically records them, whether he is home or not. Distinguishing between Work and Home: Worlds Converge to the

Benefit of Both

Designer Richard Mishaan has created the ultimate doctor's retreat: his content-rich studio is an entertainment haven that links him with the rest of his home while enabling him to attend to critical clinical work - all on his two Philips FlatTVs. If These Walls Could Talk...More Freedom with Speech Recognition

Technology

For many consumers, the easiest way to communicate is by using the most natural human interface - the spoken word. Philips is a pioneer and one of the global market leaders in speech recognition, natural dialogue and language understanding technologies.

"Consumers want a `smart' home where televisions, PCs and other consumer electronics devices connect effortlessly to make life simpler and more stress-free, while meeting growing demands for better information and entertainment value."

How Does Design Meet Technology in the House?

Philips' participation in this summit of style and design does not end with these behind-the-scenes, or transparent, technologies. The company's dedication to fusing technology and aesthetics has seen the creation of products with high-tech function and flair, as well as simple beauty.

Ridge and Roderick R. Denault's colorful sitting room features the stylish 13-inch portable color television, itself a high-tech objet d'art with its metallic blue exterior, sensual lines and glowing translucent feet.

"Following the direction of the 'smart' home and ambient intelligent technology, consumer electronics have become more refined in style, yet more powerful in function. Designers seek out products that are striking, not distracting, and that fulfill the function that their clients want," says designer Roderick Denault. "The products we selected feature both state-of-the-art function and modern art aesthetics."

For The Children
