Philips Semiconductors, Divio Collaborate on Digital Video Reference Design to Enable Mass-Market Solutions.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 1999--

Partners Use 1394 Bus to Deliver Analog-to-Digital,

Digital-to-Analog Video Conversion

Philips Semiconductors and Divio Inc. today announced that they have collaborated to develop and market a reference design for the input, capture, creation, editing and distribution of standardized digital video (DV).

By combining the audio-video systems know-how of Philips Semiconductors with Divio's DV systems and solutions expertise, the partners are providing consumers with a complete, tested product that reformats analog video The original video recording method that stores continuous waves of red, green and blue intensities. In analog video, the number of rows is fixed. There are no real columns, and the maximum detail is determined by the frequency response of the analog system.  to the DV standard and DV to analog.

The Divio NW701-DAAD is the industry's most advanced manufacturing kit for desktop devices that can import, edit, and convert digital and analog video on consumer PCs. The kit is optimized for a new class of DV appliances including DVD-ReWritable drives, digital VCRs, high-definition television high-definition television (HDTV)

Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates ) and plasma displays, video projectors and other digital motion imaging products. The kit includes support for the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields. 1394 serial bus, which is fast becoming the bus of choice for DV applications. It will be on display at Fall Comdex '99, in the Divio technology suite at the Alexis Park Hotel in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. Tested Product for a Growing Industry

"Philips Semiconductors continues to advance the technology of 1394, both internally and externally, with designs that rely on our consumer systems knowledge to create the best products," said Dave Sroka, 1394 product line manager for Philips Semiconductors. "We want to provide a complete product that meets time-to-market needs and overall system requirements To be used efficiently, all computer software needs certain hardware components or other software resources to be present on a computer system. These pre-requisites are known as (computer) system requirements and are often used as a guideline as opposed to an absolute rule.  for the entire DV industry."

The joint development effort reduces design time and risk for customers, allowing them to purchase the reference design without having to allocate engineers to develop an untested solution. The full reference design kit includes source code, gerber files and schematics. Philips Semiconductors and Divio will supply the encoders, decoders and 1394 products, and work together to provide customers with technical support.

"Philips Semiconductors and Divio are creating leading DV solutions and bringing them to the mass-market," said Isaac van Kempen, vice president of marketing at Divio. "We are enabling consumer-level digital video content creation, which will lead to exciting, new video applications."

Digital Video Bridge to the Desktop

The reference design will allow manufacturers to create high-quality video solutions at affordable prices. As more mass-market applications come to require DV equipment, the NW701-DAAD will become the DV bridge to the desktop and other 1394-enabled imaging and video appliances.

The reference design combines Divio's single-chip DV CODEC encoder/decoder with Philips Semiconductors' IEEE1394 chip-set, 9-bit video decoder/scaler with 4-line combo filter, 10-bit video encoder, 8051 microcontroller, and audio CODEC (1) A hardware circuit that converts analog voice into PCM or ADPCM digital code and vice versa. The term may refer to only the A/D and D/A conversion, or it may include the compression technique for further reducing the signal (definition #2 below). See sampling and codec.  to help manufacturers develop new classes of DV appliances.

The Divio CODEC, the world's first single DV chip, uses compression technology designed for digital camcorder and videotape recording, a process that originally required six or seven chips. Digital video is the acquisition and editing format for consumer digital camcorders, professional video cameras, and post-production editing systems, and was standardized as IEC-16884 by the International Engineering Consortium. Unlike MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) An ISO/ITU standard for compressing digital video. Pronounced "em-peg," it is the universal standard for digital terrestrial, cable and satellite TV, DVDs and digital video recorders (DVRs). 2, which is not an acquisition format, DV is transcode (1) To convert from one format to another. It implies conversion between very distinct kinds of data, such as from speech into text or from analog video into digital frames. Sometimes the term is used as nothing more than a fancier synonym for "convert.  friendly and can export to several industry standards, including MPEG2. This will allow consumers to produce and distribute standardized, professional-quality content.
