Introduced by IBM in 1987, SAA includes the Common User Access (CUA), the Common Programming Interface for Communications (CPI-C) and Common Communications 6713, a highly integrated dual-input XGA (EXtended Graphics Array) A screen resolution of 1,024x768 pixels. The term stems from IBM's XGA display standard introduced in 1990, which extended VGA to 132-column text and interlaced 1,024x768x256 resolution. XGA-2 later added non-interlaced 1,024x768x64K.  scaler with integrated timing controller chip. This integrated circuit (IC) is to be used in Compaq's TFT (Thin Film Transistor) The term typically refers to active matrix screens on laptop computers. "The Philips SAA6713 will enable Compaq to develop with the smart integration approach, positioning us as the price/performance leader in the cost-sensitive 15-inch LCD display market," said Scott Gray, senior marketing manager for flat panels at Compaq Computer Corporation. "And Philips' high volume manufacturing capacity helps ensure that we will be able to meet the volume demands of this fast-growing market."

The SAA6713 IC is currently the only high-performance XGA IC in the market that combines a scaler and timing controller in a single chip. It features Philips patented motion-compensated de-interlacing technology for crisp picture quality, as well as Philips ClearFont high-resolution text scaling for sharp on-screen display of characters ranging from 8x8 to 32x32 point sizes.

"By integrating Philips' industry leading scaler technology and timing control functions on a single chip, we have eliminated a printed circuit board, passive and active components, plus a complex cable and its connectors. This integration reduces manufacturing costs and improves reliability," said Bas Fransen, global marketing director for digital display products, from the semiconductor division of Philips.

Compaq's TFT5015 15-inch LCD flat panel monitor will begin shipping worldwide, with the SAA6713 IC, in March 2002. The TFT5015 includes an analog VGA interface, 250 nits brightness, and is available with and without built-in multimedia speakers.
