Walsh (U. of Limerick, Ireland) presents a text that introduces students taking pharmacy and related medical and pharmaceutical courses to biopharmaceuticals. The volume is a sister publication to Biopharmaceuticals: Biochemistry and Biotechnology, published in 2003, which was aimed at students with experience in basic protein science and molecular biology molecular biology, scientific study of the molecular basis of life processes, including cellular respiration, excretion, and reproduction. The term molecular biology was coined in 1938 by Warren Weaver, then director of the natural sciences program at the Rockefeller . The current text is meant for a broader audience and covers the basics of protein structure and molecular biology and expands the focus on topics such as formulation and delivery of biopharmaceuticals, and includes case studies that overview the biotech and clinical aspects of products. Chapters cover these topics: gene manipulation and recombinant DNA technology recombinant DNA technology

Recombining of DNA molecules from two different species that are inserted into a host organism to produce new genetic combinations that are of value to science, medicine, agriculture, or industry.
, the drug development process, upstream and downstream processing Downstream processing refers to the recovery and purification of biosynthetic products, particularly pharmaceuticals, from natural sources such as animal or plant tissue or fermentation broth, including the recycling of salvageable components and the proper treatment and disposal , product analysis, cytokines Cytokines
Chemicals made by the cells that act on other cells to stimulate or inhibit their function. Cytokines that stimulate growth are called "growth factors.
, growth factors, therapeutic hormones, blood products and enzymes, antibodies and vaccines, and nucleic-acid and cell-based therapeutics.
