) - Pfizer Japan announced on June 23 the results of its latest attitude survey of smokers in Japan.

When asked if they think they are likely to succeed in quitting smoking, 43.9% in Sendai expressed confidence, vis-a-vis 14.3% in Hiroshima.

For the reasons why they decided to quit smoking, 45.7% mentioned health purposes and 37.0% saving money. By city, more respondents in Osaka mentioned health purposes while more in Sapporo cited saving money.

When asked how much tobacco they consume per day, 47.0% in Osaka and 43.0% in Sapporo admitted that they smoke more than a pack (20 cigarettes) a day, while only 24.0% in Fukuoka and 29.0% in Sendai do the same.

Of the respondents, 85.7% think that the expected rise in tobacco price is too steep but 65.3% said that they will not quit smoking because of the rise in price. However, 55.7% think that they may quit smoking if a pack of cigarettes costs 500 yen (US$4.34) or more.
