During her college career, she co-founded UCLA's first women's rights The effort to secure equal rights for women and to remove gender discrimination from laws, institutions, and behavioral patterns. The women's rights movement began in the nineteenth century with the demand by some women reformers for the right to vote, known as suffrage, and organization, the Womynist Collective, and founded UCLA's Annual Women's Leadership Conference titled "Mechanisms of Change"--a conference now in its 9th year. Petty has stayed active in the legal community and is a member of the American Bar Association American Bar Association (ABA), voluntary organization of lawyers admitted to the bar of any state.
