Peter Dornan tells the story of the Battle of El Alamein through the eyes of Herb Ashby of the 2/48th Battalion, who at eighteen years of age left his home in Mount Gambier gambier: see catechu.  to fight a war on the other side of the world. Herb Ashby was wounded in the Siege of Tobruk The Siege of Tobruk was a lengthy confrontation between Axis and Allied forces, mostly from the Australian 9th Division, in the North African Campaign of World War II. It started on 10 April 1941, when Lieutenant General Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps  and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct medal at Tel El Eisa on 22 July 1942. The Last Man Standing is a vividly recounted story of tragedy and triumph, and tremendous courage in extraordinary times. The author, Peter Dornan has written two successful military titles for Allen & Unwin The Silent Men and Nicky Barr.
