Suppose you were going to Peru on vacation. Should you pack scuba gear or downhill skis? It depends. Peru lies just below the equator, in the tropics tropics, also called tropical zone or torrid zone, all the land and water of the earth situated between the Tropic of Cancer at lat. 23 1-2°N and the Tropic of Capricorn at lat. 23 1-2°S. . But that doesn't mean it is always warm.

Peru has three different land regions. The coast is mostly dry, rugged desert. Peru's largest cities are located there. The highlands have few trees, and some mountains are snow-covered year-round. Farther east is the tropical forest, a region of lush vegetation and heavy rains.

AREA: 496,224 square miles, nearly twice the size of Texas.

POPULATION: 26,700,000; 72% urban. Ethnic groups: Amerindian, 45%; mestizo mestizo (māstē`sō) [Span.,=mixture], person of mixed race; particularly, in Mexico and Central and South America, a person of European (Spanish or Portuguese) and indigenous descent. , 37%; white, 15%; others, 3%.

GOVERNMENT: Presidential-legislative democracy. Alejandro Toledo Alejandro Toledo (Alejandro Celestino Toledo Manrique) (born 28 March 1946) is a Peruvian politician. He was President of Peru from 2001 to 2006. He was elected in 2001 defeating former President Alan García.  is President.

ECONOMY: Farming is the main occupation. Chief export crops are coffee, cotton, and sugar cane. Most manufacturing is by craftspeople crafts·people
