Peru.


Peru is a South American country with three distinct land regions: a desert coastal region, a mountainous central region, and a lowland selva (tropical rain forest) region in the east. This map identifies all three.

Most of Peru's Andean Indians live in the mountainous central region. Another group lives in the eastern lowlands (see map). Study the map and answer the questions.

GOVERNMENT: Presidential-legislative democracy, led by President Alan Garcia.

Any member of the various aboriginal peoples of the Western Hemisphere, with the exception of the Eskimos (Inuit) and the Aleuts.
 45%; mestizo mestizo (māstē`sō) [Span.,=mixture], person of mixed race; particularly, in Mexico and Central and South America, a person of European (Spanish or Portuguese) and indigenous descent. , mixed Spanish and Indian ancestry, 37%; white, 15%; black, Japanese, Chinese and other, 3%. The white minority, mostly of Spanish ancestry, dominates politics and the economy.

ECONOMY: Farming is Peru's leading occupation, although only 2.8% of the land can be farmed. Poverty is high, especially in rural areas. There is a huge difference between the incomes of the urban residents and people who live in rural areas. Rich in minerals, Peru exports copper, silver, zinc, iron ore, lead, and petroleum.

PER CAPITA [Latin, By the heads or polls.] A term used in the Descent and Distribution of the estate of one who dies without a will. It means to share and share alike according to the number of individuals.  GDP GDP (guanosine diphosphate): see guanine.  *: $6,400.

LANGUAGES: Both Spanish and Quechua are official languages. Aymara and other Amazonian languages are also spoken.
